I’d tried to text Archer, but got no response. Then when I’d tried Hawk, it went straight to voicemail. Already, I was pissed I couldn’t be the one to take down Carlos’s killer, even though I was glad the guy was dead. Any other shitty news right now would probably send me over the edge—something I’m pretty sure Flick was well aware of. Hence the quiet, I feared.

I pushed through the door of our room about twenty minutes later, a bag of ice in hand, and a small sandwich for her to eat. But at the sight of Maya lying on the bed, I froze, nearly dropping it all to the floor.

Rolled over on her side, a bare shoulder exposed—even in the nearing dark—I gave myself a minute to study what I’d coveted for so long. I deserved to look at least, didn’t I?
